FINE TUNING YOUR PRESCRIPTION
The exam will not only be used to determine your prescription, but we will take a look at the health of your eyes. Much like looking through a microscope, a slit lamp exam gives us a magnified view of the structures of the eye in order to evaluate your overall ocular health. This test can assist in the early detection of a large array of conditions and diseases including: cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, and diabetic retinopathy.
The refraction is a method by which we determine your prescription. At this point, we are checking for myopia (also known as nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (poor reading that occurs normally after the age of 40) and astigmatism (a deformation of the cornea which can range from mild to severe).
The findings are normally made into glasses or contact lenses in orderi to fine tune a patient's vision.
